See (2019) is a post-apocalyptic science fiction series that explores a world where humanity has lost the ability to see, and the few remaining survivors must adapt to a visionless existence. Produced by Apple TV+, the series was created by Steven Knight and stars Jason Momoa, Alfre Woodard, and Sylvia Hoeks. Set in a distant future, See is a unique take on the genre, focusing on themes of survival, family, power, and what it means to be human when sight, one of the most essential senses, is no longer available.
Setting the Stage
The series begins hundreds of years after a virus has wiped out most of humanity, leaving only a small fraction of survivors. The survivors of this catastrophe are born blind, and for generations, the human race has adapted to living without sight. The world has been completely reshaped by this change: technology, infrastructure, and society have all evolved to accommodate the blindness of the population. Cities have crumbled, and nature has taken over the ruins of the old world.
In this new world, the concept of “sight” is mythologizedโsomething that only exists in stories passed down from ancestors. To see is considered a divine and dangerous power, leading to tensions between those who believe sight should be eradicated and those who wish to restore it. The series explores the consequences of living in such a world, with its characters navigating a landscape of danger, mystery, and human conflict.
Plot Overview
The story centers around Baba Voss (played by Jason Momoa), a fierce warrior and protector who is raising two children, Kofun and Haniwa, who possess the ability to see. These children, born with sight in a world where it has long been forgotten, become the focal point of a battle between various factions, each with their own vision of what the future should look like.
As Baba Voss struggles to protect his family from external threats, including the powerful Queen Kane (played by Sylvia Hoeks), a ruler who seeks to control the blind world and suppress those who can see, he must confront both internal and external challenges. Queen Kane, who has her own twisted vision of a sightless world, believes that those who can see are a threat to the natural order and must be eradicated.
Meanwhile, the childrenโs ability to see becomes increasingly valuable, leading to a dangerous struggle between those who want to harness this power for themselves and those who wish to protect the knowledge and gift of sight.
