See (2019) is a post-apocalyptic science fiction series that premiered on Apple TV+, offering a unique and immersive vision of a future where the human race has been rendered blind. Created by Steven Knight, the series stars Jason Momoa as Baba Voss, a leader and protector in a society that has adapted to life without sight. The show is set in a distant future, hundreds of years after a mysterious virus has wiped out much of humanity and caused all survivors to lose their ability to see. As a result, society has restructured itself in a world where sight is no longer a factor in daily life, and people have learned to navigate using heightened senses and instinct.
The central plot of See revolves around Baba Voss, who leads a tribe in a world where survival is deeply intertwined with the ability to adapt to an environment without sight. Baba Voss is fiercely protective of his family, especially his adopted daughter, who has the rare ability to seeโa gift that could change the course of humanity. The emergence of this gift sets the stage for conflict, as rival groups, including a powerful and dangerous queen named Kane (Sylvia Hoeks), see the ability to see as either a threat or a means to control the future of humankind.
The world-building in See is one of its standout features. The series presents a world where humanity has developed new social structures, technologies, and customs to cope with the loss of sight. Despite the lack of vision, the characters have learned to survive in a physically demanding, often hostile environment.
They use heightened hearing, echolocation, and an acute sense of touch to navigate their surroundings and communicate with one another. These sensory adaptations give the show a distinctive, immersive quality, with a heavy emphasis on sound design to help convey the world in which the characters exist.
