Cargo (2017) is an Australian post-apocalyptic drama Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling. Based on their 2013 short film of the same name, this feature-length adaptation explores themes of survival, sacrifice, and the enduring bond of family amidst a zombie outbreak. Anchored by an emotionally powerful performance from Martin Freeman, Cargo is as much a human story as it is a survival thriller.
Set in rural Australia after a devastating virus outbreak, the film follows Andy (Martin Freeman), a father struggling to protect his infant daughter, Rosie, in a world overrun by the infected. The virus transforms its victims into zombie-like creatures within 48 hours of being bitten. After his wife succumbs to the infection, Andy is bitten as well, leaving him with limited time to find a safe haven for Rosie before he, too, turns.
Desperate and running out of options, Andy embarks on a harrowing journey through the desolate Australian outback, seeking someone who can care for his daughter. Along the way, he encounters a young Aboriginal girl, Thoomi (Simone Landers), who is on a mission to protect her infected father using traditional methods. Together, Andy and Thoomi form an unlikely alliance, navigating through dangers from both the infected and the remnants of humanity.
