The Thing (2011) is a prequel to the 1982 classic horror film The Thing, directed John Carpenter. While the original film is considered one of the greatest horror movies of all time, the 2011 version delves into the events that led up to the terrifying incident at the isolated Antarctic base. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., the film aims to explore the origins of the parasitic alien creature and the first encounter between humans and this malevolent force. While it carries the same eerie atmosphere and sense of claustrophobia as its predecessor, The Thing (2011) attempts to capture both the intense paranoia and the dread of the unknown that made the original so iconic.
The story is set in 1982, shortly before the events of Carpenter’s The Thing. The film focuses on a Norwegian research team working at an Antarctic station, led by Dr. Sander Halvorson (played by Ulrich Thomsen). When the team discovers a crashed alien spacecraft buried in the ice, they bring the body of the alien they find inside back to their research facility. Initially, the team believes they have made a scientific breakthrough, but it quickly becomes clear that the alien is not deadโ€”it’s merely in a dormant state.
When the alien awakens, it begins to wreak havoc, infiltrating the crew through a horrific process of imitation. The creature can perfectly mimic the appearance of any living organism, causing the team to spiral into paranoia as they struggle to figure out who is human and who has been assimilated by the alien.
