The Northman is a visually stunning and visceral epic, blending historical authenticity with mythological undertones. It tells a brutal yet poignant tale of revenge, identity, and destiny, anchored in Viking culture and Norse mythology.
The story follows Prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgรฅrd), a Viking warrior who embarks on a harrowing quest to avenge his father’s murder. As a child, Amleth witnesses the betrayal and assassination of his father, King Aurvandil War-Raven (Ethan Hawke), by his uncle Fjรถlnir (Claes Bang). Fjรถlnir seizes the throne and takes Amlethโ€™s mother, Queen Gudrรบn (Nicole Kidman), as his wife.
Fleeing for his life, the young Amleth vows to return and exact vengeance, uttering the words that drive him throughout his life:
“I will avenge you, Father. I will save you, Mother. I will kill you, Fjรถlnir.”
Years later, Amleth becomes a fearsome berserker raider, consumed by his vow. Upon learning that Fjรถlnir has been deposed and now rules a remote farmstead in Iceland, Amleth infiltrates Fjรถlnirโ€™s world by posing as a slave. Alongside Olga of the Birch Forest (Anya Taylor-Joy), a mysterious and resourceful woman, Amleth plots his revenge. However, as he gets closer to fulfilling his destiny, he uncovers unexpected truths about his family and the price of vengeance.
