The Northman is a visually stunning and visceral epic, blending historical authenticity with mythological undertones. It tells a brutal yet poignant tale of revenge, identity, and destiny, anchored in Viking culture and Norse mythology.
The story follows Prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgรฅrd), a Viking warrior who embarks on a harrowing quest to avenge his father’s murder. As a child, Amleth witnesses the betrayal and assassination of his father, King Aurvandil War-Raven (Ethan Hawke), by his uncle Fjรถlnir (Claes Bang). Fjรถlnir seizes the throne and takes Amlethโs mother, Queen Gudrรบn (Nicole Kidman), as his wife.
Fleeing for his life, the young Amleth vows to return and exact vengeance, uttering the words that drive him throughout his life:
“I will avenge you, Father. I will save you, Mother. I will kill you, Fjรถlnir.”
Years later, Amleth becomes a fearsome berserker raider, consumed by his vow. Upon learning that Fjรถlnir has been deposed and now rules a remote farmstead in Iceland, Amleth infiltrates Fjรถlnirโs world by posing as a slave. Alongside Olga of the Birch Forest (Anya Taylor-Joy), a mysterious and resourceful woman, Amleth plots his revenge. However, as he gets closer to fulfilling his destiny, he uncovers unexpected truths about his family and the price of vengeance.
