Explorers (1985)
A boy obsessed with ’50s sci-fi movies about aliens has a recurring dream about a blueprint of some kind, which he draws for his inventor friend. With the help of a third kid, they follow it and build themselves a spaceship. Now what? A mid 80’s Sci-Fi fantasy movie written by Eric Luke and directed by Joe Dante that ended up being a huge box office failure mainly due to being released just over a week later than Back to the Future, but it gained a cult following upon its VHS release and it’s been a favourite of mine ever since.
This movie was rushed into production and never properly edited, but the end product still worked with some good-looking effects for its time, a great score by Jerry Goldsmith and a terrific young cast which includes Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix and Jason Presson in the leads and they’re well supported by Amanda Peterson, Bobby Fite, Dana Ivey, Taliesin Jaffe, James Cromwell, Karen Mayo-Chandler, Robert Picardo, Meshach Taylor, Mary Kay Place, Brooke Bundy and Dante regular collaborator Dick Miller. All in all this is just wholesome family entertainment and it’s a movie that doesn’t get spoken about enough these days.
