I recently watched the 2010 remake of this movie with Sam Whatsisname, and the first thing that struck me was that for all the cutting edge CGI money can buy, it simply cannot recreate the creepily effective and sometimes downright scary Stop Motion Animation, practical effects and traditional makeup. As a kid Medusa, Calibos and the Kraken all completely petrified me.
Clash of the Titans is a 1981 epic fantasy adventure film directed by Desmond Davis and written by Beverley Cross, loosely based on the Greek myth of Perseus. Starring Harry Hamlin, Judi Bowker, Burgess Meredith, Maggie Smith and Laurence Olivier, the film features the final work of stop-motion visual effects artist Ray Harryhausen.
Perseus (Hamlin), son of the Greek god Zeus (Olivier), grows up on a deserted island. His destiny is to marry Princess Andromeda (Bowker), who will someday rule the city of Joppa. But as long as the satyr Calibos (McCarthy) — who uses a giant vulture to kidnap Andromeda’s soul every night — is alive, no one can marry her. Perseus travels to Joppa, where he must defeat Calibos and other mythological monsters to rescue Andromeda.
Co-produced between the United States and United Kingdom, it was theatrically released on June 12, 1981, and grossed $41 million at the North American box office, making it the eleventh-highest grossing film of the year. A novelization by Alan Dean Foster was also published in 1981. A 3D remake of the same name was released by Warner Bros. on April 2, 2010.
They certainly do not make them like this these day which is a crying shame, modern filmmakers should embrace these old special effects techniques and keep them alive, in my humble and rambling opinion.
