The Last Survivors (2014)

A Post-Apocalyptic Fight for Survival in a World Without Water
The Last Survivors (2014), also known as The Well, is a gritty and intense post-apocalyptic thriller directed by Tom Hammock. Set in a world devastated by a catastrophic drought, the film tells the story of a young girl’s desperate struggle to survive in a barren, waterless landscape where the few remaining survivors must fight for every drop.
The film’s central character is 17-year-old Kendal (played by Haley Lu Richardson), a resourceful and determined survivor living in the ruins of an old farmhouse in Oregon. Water is the most precious commodity, and nearly all sources of it have dried up. Kendal’s primary mission is to protect a well that has somehow managed to remain functional, keeping her and a few others alive. Living with her sick friend Dean (Booboo Stewart), she hopes to one day fix an old airplane left on the property, believing it might be her only chance to escape the endless drought.
As society has collapsed, what remains of humanity is fractured into small groups and individuals, all scrambling for survival. A brutal land baron named Carson (played by Jon Gries) and his ruthless henchmen are on a mission to control the remaining water sources. Carson’s men roam the land, killing anyone who stands in their way and taking over whatever water sources they find.
Kendal is forced to use her wits, strength, and determination to protect the well, as well as her friends, from Carson’s merciless crew. Armed with a shotgun and a fierce will to survive, she becomes the last line of defense against Carson’s forces, transforming into a symbol of resilience and hope in a desolate world. The film builds tension as Kendal’s battle for survival escalates, with each encounter becoming a test of her resolve and ingenuity.
What makes The Last Survivors stand out is its stark depiction of a world stripped of its most basic necessity: water. The film creates a tense, almost claustrophobic atmosphere as characters are constantly on edge, knowing that one wrong move could lead to their death by dehydration or at the hands of violent marauders.
Visually, the film captures the dry, desolate landscape beautifully, using the barren environment to reflect the desperation and isolation of its characters. Haley Lu Richardson’s performance as Kendal is strong and compelling, portraying a young woman who refuses to give up, even when all seems lost.
The Last Survivors is a raw, suspenseful film about survival, human endurance, and the fight to protect what’s most precious in an unforgiving world.
