The Last Legion (2007) is a historical action-adventure film directed by Doug Lefler, based on the 2002 novel The Last Legion by Valerio Massimo Manfredi. Set during the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the film blends historical events with legend, offering an exciting narrative about the last emperor of Rome and his attempts to restore the Empireโ€™s glory.
The story begins in the year 476 AD, as the Western Roman Empire is on the verge of collapse. Romulus Augustulus, the last Roman Emperor in the West, is deposed by the barbarian king Odoacer (played by Peter Mullan), and the Empire seems to crumble before his eyes. Romulus, played by Thomas Sangster, is sent into exile to the island of Capri under the guardianship of a group of loyal soldiers, including the seasoned warrior Aurlius (played by Colin Firth).
Meanwhile, a group of loyal Roman soldiers and a few unlikely allies, including a mysterious warrior named Furio (played by John Hannah) and the powerful Empress Justina (played by Aishwarya Rai), rally together to rescue Romulus and protect the sacred artifact known as the Legionโ€™s Sword, an ancient weapon that holds the key to Romeโ€™s final hope.
The film follows their journey as they travel to distant lands, fighting through ambushes and betrayals in their attempt to reclaim the heart of the Empire. Along the way, Romulus discovers his potential as a leader, while the group uncovers deep secrets about the fate of Rome and its legendary past.
