The Relic (1997) is a science fiction horror film directed by Peter Hyams, based on the 1995 novel by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.
The story takes place in Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History, where a mysterious, ancient relic is shipped from South America. Dr. Margo Green (Penelope Ann Miller), a biologist working at the museum, teams up with homicide detective Lt. Vincent D’Agosta (Tom Sizemore) after a series of brutal murders occur within the museum.
As they investigate, they uncover a terrifying truth—the relic has unleashed a monstrous creature, a mutant created through a combination of ancient tribal rituals and evolutionary forces. The creature is on a killing spree, targeting museum staff and visitors, as the protagonists race against time to stop it before a high-profile gala at the museum brings more people into harm’s way.
Blending elements of horror, science fiction, and thriller genres, The Relic is known for its suspenseful atmosphere, practical effects, and creature design, delivering a mix of mystery and terror set against the backdrop of a dark, eerie museum.
