Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant (2023)

The Covenant is a powerful and emotionally grounded war drama from director Guy Ritchie, known for his stylized action but here delivering something far more raw and restrained.

The film follows U.S. Army Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal), who forms a bond with Afghan interpreter Ahmed during their mission in Afghanistan. When Kinley is wounded, Ahmed risks everything to carry him across hostile territory to safety.

After returning home, Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were left behindโ€”despite promises of a visa. Driven by duty and guilt, Kinley returns to the war-torn region to make good on his word, no matter the cost.

The film trades Ritchieโ€™s usual flash for gritty realism, intense tension, and deeply human stakes. Gyllenhaal delivers a gripping performance, and the story serves as a timely and emotional reflection on promises made in war.
