Winter’s Bone (2010)

With her home in danger of being repossessed after her dad skips bail and disappears, an Ozark teen breaks the local code of conduct by confronting her kin about their conspiracy of silence. If she fails to track her father down she’ll be made homeless along with her younger siblings, and their disabled mother.
A very bleak, but also very realistic backwoods thriller which is brilliantly directed by Debra Granik. With a great slow burning, but very tense plot the suspense builds throughout right until the very end, which is elevated even further by amazing performances from a talented cast including a breakthrough role for Jennifer Lawrence in the lead and supporting cast including John Hawkes, Dale Dickey, Garret Dillahunt, Sheryl Lee and Tate Taylor. Add to this a quite haunting score from Dickon Hinchliffe and what you have here is arguably one of the finest independent movies ever made.
